Barcelona has been in a downfall this past few years, losing 4-0 in Anfield, 8-2 against Bayern, 3-0 Against Benfica, 2-1 against Madrid, and more recently 1-0 to Rayo Vallecano. The last time Barcelona lost to Los Franjirrojos was back in 2002, and even though most of these defeats were before Koeman's era, he is the first coach since the 1935/36 season to lose three times in a row against Real Madrid. These negative statistics have caught the directive's eye causing them to sack the Dutch manager after being appointed on August 19, 2020. This means he was just over 13 months in charge, and during that time Lionel Messi left the club.
“FC Barcelona has dismissed Ronald Koeman as coach of the first team tonight,” read the club statement. “The president of the club, Joan Laporta, has informed him after the defeat against Rayo Vallecano. Ronald Koeman will say goodbye to the squad this Thursday at the Ciudad Deportiva.”
“FC Barcelona wants to thank the services rendered to the entity and wishes him good luck in his career.”
Some names have been ringing on who could take over him, like Xavi, Conte, and Roberto Martínez, but there has been no official statement on who will take over him.
